Day 1
Begin your exploration of Tiruvannamalai by visiting the iconic Arunachaleswara Temple, where spirituality and history unite in perfect harmony. This ancient Shaivite temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, marks an auspicious beginning to your journey. The towering gopurams and intricate carvings will draw you into an atmosphere of deep devotion. As you enter the tranquil courtyards, the divine presence of Arunachaleswarar and the profound spiritual energy that has attracted pilgrims for centuries will welcome you, making it an ideal start for your spiritual adventure.

ARUNACHALESWARAR TEMPLE
At 6:30 a.m., your host will arrive at your accommodation to pick you up in our vehicle, beginning the sacred journey in Tiruvannamalai. We will first visit Sri Ramana Ashram, home of the revered saint “Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi” since 1922. The profound presence of the sage still lingers here, inspiring deep self-reflection. Many visitors find that just one visit to this ashram transforms their understanding of life, spirituality, and the divine.

As you approach the Arunachaleswara Temple, the majestic gopurams stand tall against the sacred Arunachala Hill, welcoming pilgrims into its divine embrace. This ancient Shaivite temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, worshipped here as Arunachaleswarar or Annamalaiyaar, with Goddess Parvati honored as Unnamalai Amman. A stunning example of Dravidian architecture, the temple’s current structure dates back to the 9th century CE, as documented in inscriptions from the Chola dynasty.

Spanning 25 acres, the temple is a marvel of devotion and craftsmanship. Its five prakarams (enclosures) lead you through a spiritual journey. As you enter through the eastern gopuram, the Raja Gopuram, which rises 217 feet high, its detailed sculptures depict captivating stories from Hindu mythology. The temple’s vast perimeter, with its eastern and western walls stretching 210 meters and the southern and northern walls reaching 451 and 480 meters, encloses a breathtaking expanse filled with beautifully crafted smaller temples and inner sanctuaries. A massive Nandi stands before the main sanctum, symbolizing devotion to Lord Shiva. The underground Pathala Lingam is where Saint Ramana Maharshi meditated, adding an element of mystique to the temple.

Within the temple, you’ll also find shrines dedicated to other deities, including the shrine for Goddess Parvati, known as Unnamulai Amman, and a large tank that reflects the towering gopurams, enhancing the serenity of the space. The temple is not only a symbol of deep spiritual significance but also a testament to Tamil Nadu’s rich architectural and cultural heritage.

BREAKFAST
Arpana Hotel in Tiruvannamalai offers a delightful breakfast experience, blending the flavors of authentic South Indian dishes with Western and Continental options. Whether you’re craving crispy dosas with sambar or a classic English breakfast with eggs and toast, Arpana caters to both local tastes and international appetites. The variety ensures that every guest, whether local or from afar, can enjoy a satisfying breakfast in this spiritually enriched town.

RAMANA ASHRAM
Locally known as “Ramanashramam,” a visit to Ramana Ashram in Tiruvannamalai is a profoundly peaceful experience. As you step onto the ashram grounds, the contrast between its tranquility and the bustling town is striking. The setting reflects the teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi, who encouraged self-inquiry with the question “Who am I?” The ashram includes significant spots like the Samadhi Hall, where the saint’s tomb is located, and the Old Hall, where he meditated. The Mother’s Shrine honors the saint’s mother, and the Shivalingam here is named Matrubhuteswarar.

The ashram library provides further insights into the sage’s wisdom, and the Nirvana Room, where Ramana attained enlightenment, radiates spiritual energy. Visitors can also explore the goshala and see the samadhis of animals Ramana Maharshi spiritually liberated. The ashram’s peaceful grounds, complete with peacocks and monkeys, invite deep reflection and spiritual connection.

SESHADRI SWAMIGAL ASHRAM
Sri Seshadri Swamigal Ashram in Tiruvannamalai is a quiet retreat dedicated to the life of Sri Seshadri Swamigal, a saint who lived during Ramana Maharshi’s time. Just steps away from Ramana Ashram, this ashram offers insight into the enigmatic life of the mystic Seshadri Swamigal, who cared for the meditating Ramana in his early years.

The main shrine, adorned with sacred ash and flowers, holds a life-sized statue of Seshadri Swamigal. Devotees fondly recall his miraculous acts and cryptic teachings. A small museum in the ashram displays artifacts from the saint’s life, and regular sessions of bhajans keep his legacy alive. Though less known than Ramana Maharshi, Seshadri Swamigal played a significant role in Tiruvannamalai’s spiritual history, and his ashram offers a glimpse into the depth of devotion that characterizes this sacred town.

YOGI RAMSURATH KUMAR ASHRAM
The Yogi Ramsuratkumar Ashram, dedicated to the “Beggar Saint” or “Visiri Samiyar” (the saint with a fan), is a serene sanctuary in Tiruvannamalai. The Yogi’s teachings emphasize complete surrender to the divine, often encapsulated by the phrase “My Father alone exists.” His connection with Ramana Maharshi profoundly shaped his spiritual path.

The ashram’s main hall is a circular structure designed to invite natural light, creating a peaceful environment for meditation. The life-sized statue of the Yogi, holding his fan and coconut shell, reflects his humility and wisdom. The ashram remains a haven for spiritual seekers, offering a space for introspection and a deep connection to the Yogi’s simple yet profound teachings.

LUNCH & REST

After lunch, take a well-deserved rest until 4 pm to recharge for the spiritual journey ahead.

We will begin our much-anticipated pradakshina (girivalam) around the revered Arunachala Hill at Ramana Ashram. After receiving blessings from Sri Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi, we embark on this sacred walk, which will lead us back to our starting point at the ashram, completing the spiritual circle.

GIRIVALAM – PRADAKSHINA AROUND ARUNACHALA MOUNTAIN

The pradakshina around Arunachala mountain is not just a physical pilgrimage, but a deeply spiritual journey. This 14-kilometer circumambulation is a meditative experience, drawing devotees from all corners of the world. The path, worn smooth by centuries of footsteps, hums with energy, as Arunachala—believed to be the very embodiment of Lord Shiva in mountain form—towers over pilgrims like a watchful presence.

Throughout the walk, you’ll encounter eight significant lingams, each symbolizing a unique spiritual aspect:

  • Indra Lingam: Linked to the king of gods, it is believed to bring material wealth and prosperity.
  • Agni Lingam: Representing fire, this lingam purifies and transforms the soul.
  • Yama Lingam: Associated with the god of death, it teaches the impermanence of life and detachment.
  • Niruthi Lingam: Known for dispelling obstacles and negative energies.
  • Varuna Lingam: The water deity, said to bring emotional stability and harmony.
  • Vayu Lingam: Representing air, it is believed to foster mental clarity and peace.
  • Kubera Lingam: Associated with the god of wealth, it invites abundance.
  • Isanya Lingam: The representation of Lord Shiva himself, this lingam is especially auspicious.

Along the way, other spiritual landmarks enhance the experience. The ancient Adi Annamalai Temple, predating the grand Arunachaleswarar Temple, offers a serene space for reflection. At the Pachaiamman Temple, dedicated to Goddess Parvati, you’ll experience a divine feminine energy, balancing the powerful masculine presence of Shiva.

As you walk, you’ll encounter fellow pilgrims of all ages, some in silent meditation, others chanting mantras, all united in devotion to Arunachala. Scattered along the route are small shrines, sacred trees, and quiet spots for meditation, weaving together a rich tapestry of spiritual significance.

As you complete the circular journey and return to Ramana Ashram, you may feel a deep transformation. The combination of the physical walk, the sacred energy of Arunachala, and the spiritual power of the sites you pass leaves many feeling purified, centered, and connected to something greater than themselves. This girivalam is not only a sacred pilgrimage but a symbolic journey of self-discovery and return to one’s spiritual source. Whether performed during the luminous full moon nights, surrounded by thousands of devotees, or in the calm solitude of a quiet day, this walk around Arunachala remains a profound and life-altering spiritual experience.

DINNER & REST

After completing this deeply moving pradakshina, return to Tiruvannamalai for a comforting dinner. Enjoy the rich flavors of local South Indian cuisine, a perfect way to nourish both body and soul after your spiritual journey. As night falls, retire to a peaceful space, allowing the day’s transformative experiences to sink in, as you rest and rejuvenate for the adventures that await tomorrow.

DAY 2

Our second day begins with an early visit to the revered Sri Ramana Ashram, setting the tone for our spiritual journey as we prepare to ascend the sacred Arunachala mountain.

TREK TO ARUNACHALA HILL

SKANDASHRAM

Leaving behind the tranquil aura of Ramana Ashram, we embark on a serene trek toward Skandashram and Virupaksha Cave. The trail leading to Skandashram starts with a relatively steep climb, about 1.5 kilometers from the ashram. The hike takes around 30 to 45 minutes and rewards us with breathtaking vistas of the surrounding landscapes. Though the path can be challenging at moments, the spiritual atmosphere and scenic beauty make the journey deeply fulfilling. Each step takes us closer to Skandashram, the sacred site where Ramana Maharshi spent seven years in deep meditation. The soft mountain breeze seems to carry whispers of ancient spiritual wisdom, refreshing both body and mind.

Upon reaching Skandashram, a profound sense of peace welcomes us. Perched on the hillside with stunning views of the Arunachaleswara Temple below, the ashram’s simplicity belies its spiritual depth. Ramana Maharshi lived here from 1916 to 1922, and the space still resonates with his presence. The stone structure blends naturally into the mountainside, consisting of a meditation hall, a small kitchen, and a miraculous spring that appeared during his stay, providing water for him and his followers. This serene atmosphere offers an ideal space for meditation and introspection, inviting visitors to engage in the self-inquiry teachings of Ramana Maharshi.

Skandashram continues to draw spiritual seekers from around the world, its tranquil environment embodying the timeless wisdom of Ramana Maharshi. Meditating here feels like stepping out of the physical world and into a realm of profound inner silence, where one can connect deeply with the teachings of self-realization.

VIRUPAKSHA CAVE

Continuing further up the mountain, we arrive at Virupaksha Cave, where Ramana Maharshi lived for 17 years, from 1899 to 1916. This cave, named after the ancient sage Virupaksha Deva, who meditated here centuries ago, holds immense spiritual significance for devotees of Ramana Maharshi. The modest entrance to the cave leads into a cool, shadowy space that offers an atmosphere perfect for deep meditation and self-reflection. The silence inside the cave is profound, making it a sacred space for those who seek spiritual awakening.

The trek to Virupaksha Cave takes around 1 to 2 hours, and it’s best to start early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat. As you descend the mountain, the serenity of Skandashram and Virupaksha Cave lingers in your heart, creating a lasting sense of peace and spiritual fulfillment. The experience of visiting these sacred places becomes an unforgettable part of your spiritual journey, offering insights and memories that will stay with you long after your time in Tiruvannamalai.

BREAKFAST

After the trek, we take a break to enjoy a hearty breakfast before continuing our exploration of Tiruvannamalai’s spiritual sites. Our next stop is the ancient Adi Annamalai Temple.

ADI ANNAMALAI TEMPLE

Nestled at the base of the holy Arunachala Hill, the Adi Annamalai Temple is a jewel of ancient spirituality and architecture. Older than the grand Arunachaleswara Temple, this sacred shrine holds a significant place in the spiritual heritage of Tiruvannamalai. The term “Adi” means “original,” highlighting its importance as the first temple dedicated to Lord Shiva in this region. Dating back to the Chola dynasty, possibly as far back as the 9th century, the temple is a testament to the enduring devotion to Lord Shiva. Here, Shiva is worshipped as Annamalaiyar, and the temple is often referred to as Aadhi Arunachaleswara, honoring its status as the original temple of Arunachala.

At the heart of the temple lies the sanctum, where a self-manifested lingam of Lord Shiva is enshrined. This ancient svayambhu lingam is considered highly sacred, and its energy draws devotees into a state of deep spiritual reflection. The temple’s simplicity and profound atmosphere encourage pilgrims to connect with the divine essence of Arunachala.

As we approach the temple, its understated elegance captivates the eye. Unlike the towering gopurams of the larger Arunachaleswara Temple, Adi Annamalai Temple’s charm lies in its intimate scale and exquisite craftsmanship. The intricately carved pillars and mandapams (halls) are adorned with lifelike depictions of deities, celestial beings, and mythological scenes. These intricate carvings showcase the incredible skill of ancient artisans, making the temple not only a place of worship but also a marvel of artistic achievement.

For those seeking a deeper spiritual connection, the Adi Annamalai Temple offers a serene space for meditation and prayer. Its ancient stones resonate with centuries of devotion, providing a sense of continuity between the past and the present. Set against the backdrop of the mighty Arunachala, this temple is a sanctuary of peace, inviting all who visit to experience the timeless spiritual energy of Tiruvannamalai.

After a delightful breakfast, the journey leads to the serene Pachaiamman Temple, a hidden gem nestled along the sacred Girivalam path encircling Arunachala Hill. This ancient temple, dedicated to the goddess Pachaiamman, a form of Parvati, offers a peaceful contrast to the grandeur of the Arunachaleswara Temple in the heart of Tiruvannamalai. The name “Pachai,” meaning green in Tamil, symbolizes the goddess’s connection to nature and healing, as well as the temple’s lush surroundings. Within the temple’s sanctum, the idol of Pachaiamman, painted in a soothing green hue, exudes an aura of nurturing calm.

The temple’s architecture is a testament to traditional Dravidian style, marked by a vibrant gopuram (entrance tower) and intricate stone carvings. The tranquil courtyard, shaded by ancient trees, provides a perfect setting for meditation and quiet reflection. This temple also holds deep significance for devotees of Ramana Maharshi. During the early days of his spiritual life at Arunachala, Ramana frequently visited the Pachaiamman Temple, even spending six months here in 1905 during a plague outbreak in Tiruvannamalai. It was within this sacred sanctuary that he composed the “Arunachala Padikam” (Eleven Verses to Arunachala). The cave where he meditated still exists within the temple complex, drawing spiritual seekers who come to connect with his energy.

Beyond its religious significance, the Pachaiamman Temple is a haven of natural beauty and historical relevance. Its serene environment and spiritual ties to Ramana Maharshi make it a must-visit destination for those on a pilgrimage around Arunachala. The temple is a beautiful blend of devotion to the divine feminine and the lasting spiritual legacy of one of India’s most revered modern saints, offering a uniquely peaceful experience in the heart of Tiruvannamalai’s spiritual landscape.
